As photographers in an ever-changing industry, artistically and economically, it can be difficult to know where to turn for real market insight.

Zenfolio launched the State of the Photography Industry Survey when the world was forced to pause indefinitely—when bookings vanished overnight, and many photographers felt unsure of what the future would look like.  What started as a way to understand that crazy time of uncertainty has since grown into something larger.

Now, six years and seven reports later, the questions have certainly changed, but they haven’t gone away.  How are people finding new clients? Is marketing now just constant posting and chasing social media trends?  Where does the artist fit in an increasingly AI-driven culture? And when you run your own business, is work/life balance truly within reach?

The 2026 State of the Photography Industry Report isn’t just statistics…it isn’t just numbers. It’s a reflection of the people behind the work. It’s real experiences, real struggles, and real perspectives from photographers navigating everyday life. It’s you. From staying creatively fulfilled and managing a business as a solopreneur to exploring new opportunities for growth, this study examined a wide range of topics:

AI in photography.

As negative sentiment towards artificial intelligence has shifted among creatives over the last few years, more and more photographers are dipping their toes into the AI waters. Find out how they’re using this technology to their advantage.

Exploring creative frontiers.

Photographers are stepping outside their creative comfort zones to try new genres, but not all for the same reason. The factors driving this year’s shift may surprise you.

What’s driving new client acquisition?

Social media continues to be a focal point for every industry, including the arts and photography. But, at the end of the day, does it really bring new clients in the door?

Operational and workflow management trends and tools.

There have never been more tools available for small businesses. Workflow management software, accounting applications, editing platforms, client booking systems, and more. With a smorgasbord of options available, what tools and materials are photographers actually using?

The delegation dilemma.

Doing it all comes at a cost. A surprisingly small number of photographers feel in control of the stress that comes with owning a business. Here’s where delegation starts to matter more than ever.

Every photographer is navigating their own journey in this highly competitive industry. Sometimes, seeing the bigger picture helps you make sense of your own. That’s exactly what this report is here to offer. And why the bigger picture is worth exploring.

It takes a community…
