Make more from every shoot: A photographer’s guide to selling prints, products, and digital files.
October 2nd, 2026
The next sale might already be sitting in a gallery you’ve just delivered.
October is here, and for a lot of photographers, things are about to get really busy. The sessions are booked, the shoots are picking up, and the editing queue is getting longer. Before you know it, you’ll be delivering galleries, answering client messages, chasing deadlines, and wondering how it is suddenly November.
So, before busy season really gets going, it’s worth asking whether the shoots already on your calendar could be making you more.
Our State of the Photography Industry research found that 61% of photographers sell both physical and digital products. But last year, digital files outsold prints by around three and a half to one. Clients clearly want digital files, but prints, wall art, and other products give them more ways to enjoy their photos, while giving you the chance to make more from a shoot you’ve already done.
That doesn’t mean finding space for another session or adding another day of shooting to an already busy calendar. It simply means getting the selling side of your galleries working a little harder. And early October, before the season really takes off, is a pretty good time to get it sorted.

First things first: make sure your galleries are ready to sell.
Before we get into prints, packages, and upsells, start with the basics. The last thing you need in the middle of busy season is to realize that the gallery you delivered three weeks ago wasn’t actually set up to sell anything.
Take a few minutes to check the essentials:
- Is your store turned on? Make sure clients can shop directly from their gallery, not just view and download their images.
- Is your price list up to date? Keep it simple, current, and consistent so you’re not fixing prices halfway through the season.
- Are you offering both digital and physical products? Your clients may arrive looking for digital files, but that doesn’t mean they won’t add a framed print or piece of wall art when they see one they love.
It’s a little gallery housekeeping now, but it means one less thing to think about when the calendar gets busier.
Zenfolio tip: Selling and e-commerce tools can turn your gallery into a storefront, while Smart Pricing can help take some of the guesswork out of setting your rates. For more on gallery setup and delivery, take a look at How to streamline your photography delivery workflow.
Make prints easier to picture.
Here’s the thing about prints: sometimes clients need a little help imagining them. A digital file is easy because they know exactly what they’re getting, but picturing a framed photograph above the sofa takes a bit more imagination.
The good news is that selling more prints doesn’t mean you suddenly have to become a salesperson. Often, it’s simply about showing clients what their photos could look like beyond a screen.
Keep your product selection manageable rather than giving clients a huge catalog to work through. Use room views and framed previews to show photographs in real spaces, and put the images and products you think will work best front and center. If there’s a frame you know would look incredible as a large piece of wall art, help your client see it that way too.
You’ve already created photographs they love. Now you’re simply making it easier for them to do something with those photos beyond saving them to a phone or laptop. And with professional labs handling the printing and shipping, you don’t need to turn your office into a packing station in the process.
Zenfolio tip: Featured Products and integrated professional labs are both available through Zenfolio’s selling tools.
Give clients a reason to add a little more.
We’ve all been there. You’re checking out online, you’re almost at the threshold for a discount or another perk, and suddenly adding one more thing to the cart makes sense. The same principle can work inside your galleries.
Photographers using Smart Upsell saw their average order value double. You can set simple spending tiers, such as spend $150 and save 10% or spend $300 and save 15%, and clients can see the incentive while they shop.
Imagine a client has $120 of digital files in their cart. They spot a framed print they love and realize that adding it takes them into the next tier. The print goes into the cart, their order increases, and they leave with something they wanted anyway.
Packages can work in much the same way. Bundling digital files, prints, or wall art into a few clear options saves clients from having to build everything themselves. The aim is simply to make it easy to see what they can add and why it makes sense.
Zenfolio tip: Smart Upsell and packages are built into Zenfolio’s selling tools.

Sometimes clients just need a little help choosing.
You know that client who has favorited 73 photos and now has absolutely no idea what to do next? Sometimes a little guidance is all they need.
Self-service galleries can do a lot of the work for you, especially when you’re busy, but some sessions lend themselves well to a short ordering appointment. It can be in person or over a call. Walk clients through their favorites, show them which images work well together, and help them think about sizes, groupings, or where they might display them.
This can work particularly well for weddings, seniors, newborns, and branding sessions, where clients often have plenty of images to choose from. It doesn’t need to become another complicated part of your workflow either. Sometimes 20 minutes of guidance is all someone needs to go from “I think we’ll just get the files” to “Actually, that would look amazing on our wall.”
Zenfolio tip: Proofing, Favorites Across Galleries, and Single Image Pricing can all help with guided ordering, whether you meet in person or jump on a quick call.
Make your digital files work harder too.
Digital files are popular. That isn’t changing, and it doesn’t need to. Instead of trying to move clients away from them, look at how you’re packaging and selling them.
Sell collections and bundles, not just single files.
Rather than relying on individual file purchases, offer full-resolution packages and collections, or bundle a group of images at a better value than buying each one individually. If you have motion or behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, video downloads can also give clients something extra to add.
Your clients still get the digital files they came for, but they have better options for buying them. You can increase the value of the order without constantly reaching for another discount.
Zenfolio tip: Digital downloads and Selling Video Downloads are both part of Zenfolio’s selling tools.
Get ahead of the holiday rush.
October is your window. Holiday cards, family gifts, prints for grandparents, albums, and wall art are all about to become much more relevant to your clients, so anything you can set up now is one less thing to deal with when you’re also shooting, editing, and delivering.
Build your templates and pricing now.
Future You will be very grateful if Current You gets a few jobs out of the way now. Build and brand your Product Builder templates, check your holiday price lists, and decide which products you actually want to focus on this season. You don’t need to offer everything. A smaller selection of products that suits your clients and your photography is much easier to manage and much easier to shop.
Turn past galleries into new sales.
This is also a good time to revisit past galleries. Your October clients aren’t your only potential customers. Past clients already know you, already love their photos, and now they have a very good reason to go back and look at them again. An updated price list and a fresh product selection could turn last season’s shoot into this season’s print or gift order.
Get this groundwork done now, and you’ll be in a much better position when November, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and holiday shopping really get going.
Zenfolio tip: Product Builder is part of NextZen’s selling tools.
Your October selling checklist.
You don’t need to overhaul your whole business before your next shoot. Start with the things that will make the biggest difference:
- Turn on the store in every gallery you deliver.
- Check and refresh your price list.
- Add wall art and choose your Featured Products.
- Set up Smart Upsell with simple spending tiers.
- Build at least one Product Builder template.
- Package your digital files into clear collections.
- Revisit past galleries and get them ready to sell again.
- Consider assisted ordering for sessions where clients might appreciate a little help choosing.
Get these sorted now, and that’s a lot less to think about when things get really busy.
Make more from the shoots you’re already doing.
Busy season can make it feel like the only way to make more is to shoot more. More sessions, more weekends, more editing, more coffee. But there’s only so much room on the calendar, and there are only so many hours you want to spend staring at Lightroom.
Getting your galleries, products, pricing, and upsells sorted now gives every session you deliver over the next few months the chance to keep earning after you’ve put the camera down.
More ways for clients to enjoy their photos.
It also gives your clients more ways to enjoy the photographs they hired you to create. Instead of every favorite image ending up somewhere in a camera roll, it can become the framed photo in the hallway, the album that gets pulled out every year, or the print that gets wrapped up for a grandparent at Christmas.
You’ve already done the hard part. You found the client, booked the session, shot the photos, edited them, and created a gallery they love. Now make sure that gallery is ready to do a little more for your business.
Frequently asked questions.
How do I get clients to buy prints instead of only digital files?
Show them what the prints could look like. Room views, framed previews, and a focused product selection make it much easier for clients to picture their photos off the screen and on their walls. Keep the choices manageable and make your strongest options easy to find.
How much should I charge for prints and wall art?
Your client isn’t just buying the cost of a print. Your pricing also needs to account for your photography, your time, and the quality of the finished product. Keep your price list clear, confident, and easy to understand.
How do I increase the average order value from a gallery?
Make it easy for clients to buy more. Simple packages, tiered Smart Upsell incentives, and some extra ordering help for sessions where clients have a lot to choose from can all help. Photographers using Smart Upsell saw their average order value double.
Should I offer prints, digital files, or both?
Both. Clients clearly want digital files, but prints and physical products give them more ways to enjoy their photos and give you another way to make more from the same gallery.
Let your galleries do a little more for you.
You’ve already done the work of finding the client, booking the session, taking the photos, editing them, and creating a gallery they love. You don’t necessarily need another shoot squeezed into October to make more.
